    TQ & UQ Compression Sacks

    Howdy folks,

I'm doing a 7 day hike in one month. So I spent some time this weekend working out my load plan. I'm attempting to do this trip with a Osprey 'Kestrel 48liter' pack. I own a larger Kelty Coyote 75l, but I'm pretty dead-set on using this smaller pack to go as light as possible.

So....to the point already....Do any of you recommend a single (waterproof) compression sack for both your TQ & UQ together? Both my quilts are just eating up too much room in my pack.

    Thanks!

Personally, I hate to super compress my down for fear of harming it. Is there something else you can transfer some other items from the inside of the pack to attachments or pockets outside? For instance, I keep my tarp on the outside and sometimes my CCF foot pad , and my rain gear.

I have a few compression sacks that I have used, but most of the time I use the stuff sack that my EMS down sleeping bag came with. I can get my TQ, UQ and pillow in the sack without any trouble. If there is a risk of rain then I line it with a compactor trash bag. I save the compression sacks for synthetic use.

BTW, welcome from the far North , where are you headed?

I usually put my tq, uq, and hammock on a 20L waterproof compression sack. It works, but its a bit too bulky for me. I'm considering getting a 10L just for the tq and uq alone. I have a 0*+2oz overstuff incubator and a 20* standard burrow. The incubator is pretty massive, in comparison to the burrow
    I'd rather be hanging.

Trash compactor bags are much much lighter, than most if not all roll top dry bags. If weight is your target you might take a look at one.

I put my quilts in a single cuben fiber stuff sack. I can't say it's any less bulky than two stuffsacks, but it definitely weighs less than the traditional rolltop dry bags I see people using.

    Thanks for the input folks.
So, I see that over compression may be a concern. Would 7 days in a super compressed condition between camp sites really do any lasting damage? My TQ is down, my UQ is synthetic.

"BTW, welcome from the far North , where are you headed?" doogie~ I see we're neighbors.....I rock climb at the quarry in Birdsboro. I'm headed to Vermont, hiking a 77mile section of the Long Trail.

I like to use a bag as well instead of multiple stuff sacks. I figure 1 bag to hold all and squished down to bottom of pack to "form" to the pack is less material, weight, and bulk than a lot of stuff sacks full and hard as rocks that don't "mold" to fit.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I agree. Everything I have read about compresion and backpacking is that it uses too much space as it does not fit into the nooks and crannies of your pack leaving a great deal of wasted space. It will take up a great deal of space when initial packing occurs, but as you add more stuff to it, it will collapse.

I use this liner and all my down items go in it, into the bottom of the pack. The only other sack I use is for clothing.

Not the cheap option but I really like it.

I also have the Kelty Coyote and haven't used it in a while. I think it's 5.5lb, so it's an easy way to cut pounds. It's sa great pack, but I just end up over packing it.

I wouldn't worry about keeping it compressed for 7 days. Just let it breathe for several hours before using it.
