I have been using Sea-to-Summit silnylon drawstring bags to keep my down and clothes dry. When it starts raining, I also put on a Cuben pack cover. This has worked for me so far. I wouldn't want to dunk my pack into a river, though. I also don't know how the system would hold up if it would be raining continuously for several days. I tried the trash compactor bags, but they are simply too unwieldy. My sil bags have different colors, so I can easily see where the item is I'm looking for.

Personally I use Sea-to-Summit silnylon. But "zpacks.com" not sure of exact link sells Cuben Fiber Dry Bags (a little delicate but easy to patch) my silnylon gets patched often.

Also there are instructions on line on how to make you own custom dry bags to get just the right size and fit, and HF member "Bushwhacker" and others have put together good fabric vendor lists for DIY "MYOG" projects. Pack covers or liners etc. I also sometimes use an "eVent" bag with built in compression straps it fits great on a "ULA Epic". So many options.

Save yourself some time and money and just use trash compactor bags. Its cheap, simple and can double as an emergency poncho if needed. If you want to keep your pack dry then I would get a decent pack cover and/or spray your backpack with ScotchGuard or some form of water repellent.

I use nylofume bags that are lighter and tougher than the trash compactor bags I used to use. I get them from Litesmith. I have no personal or financial relationship with them.https://www.litesmith.com/nylofume-pack-liner-bags/

    • Fully waterproof
    • Tougher than compactor bags
    • Ultralight – 0.91 oz (25.9 g)

I made one from .8 DCF. It fitted my Atom 40 and my NorthernUL Sundown pack perfect. It's been in use for 3 years. I have no intention of using a Pack Cover with my packs and the roll top works great. What's nice about these packs compared to a lot of the commercial packs is they don't absorb much (if any) water compared to the standard pack material. They are also easy to seal with tape compared to silnylon or silpoly.

Even better is to get something larger, in every dimension. So if you're packing things in the liner and get stretching/bulging/etc. you're not creating any voids in the pack.

These really are the best option, IMO. It keeps my stuff bone-dry, and weighs next to nothing.
