    Sway Back Tarp

2014-02-08_12-21-55_446.jpghammock tarp.jpgMade a hex tarp and it has sway back. The ridge line was rolled and sewn together per all diy instructions I found. When you pull it tight it looks great. The moment you pull on it to stake it down, helloooo sway back. Need to make another one. What are some recommendations for a fix?

    I don't see anything unusual. What's a sway back?

I think he's saying it looks like a "sway back horse's back", as in the curvature along the ridgeline is too high.

I think it looks normal, but tell us what your objections to it are. Are you concerned that it reduces durability, is less aesthetically appealing, or that its functionality is reduced somehow?

What if you reduced the tension on the corner tie outs when you use the middle tie outs? Or increased the tautness of the ridgeline rope (assuming you have a rope that goes under the ridgeline to hold it up, but those things can cause water leakage).

Is the ridge seam straight or cat-cut?

I don't see much problem with that tarp, but if you want a straighter ridgeline, more tension on the RL and less on the tie-outs could help. Don't be afraid to pull the ridgeline tight - you made it well!
IME you don't need the RL rope running under the tarp to get good tension . (I use 'heavier' RL cord (Amsteel) above the tarp and the Zing-It prussiks really grip well on it.) YMMV

As long as my tarps don't leak or puddle, and don't snap in the breeze too much, I'm happy.

Yes. Sway back as a horses back. Everything is nice and tight. Sealed it myself, doesn't leak. Six sides are cat cut. I'm thinking this has created my problem. Allows for to much stretch. When its set up lots of head Clarence is lost. I'm not using a sperate ridge line, guess I'll try one next time. My HH hex doesn't do it.

As the others have said, this is perfectly normal for a tarp made from nylon. It stretches some. If you are worried about the loss of head clearance, then just hang your tarp higher to start with. The most likely reason your HH hex doesn't do that is due to it being made from polyester (if you have the less expensive hex tarp option).

    Cheers
