Keep in mind that my post is less about the restriction than it is the sheer existence of a policy acknowledging hammock camping. I assume the sites listed all have eligible trees, whereas other sites might have trees but too small according to the policy.

I thought these numbers might be tied to LNT recommendations but I couldn't find those on the LNT site. I know there was some discussion here previously about LNT proposal to recommend the 2" straps, but I don't recall if tree thickness was discussed. Personally, I'm fine with the 2" strap, but limiting to a 12" thick tree is overkill (lots of other factors involved). Regardless, these are rules for a specific park and they obviously could be just what's best for their sites. Wondering though if these numbers were handed down from a higher authority and we'll see something like this at all FL parks eventually.

I did an overnight in Kissimmee Prairie Preserve in April or May. When I made the reservation I asked about using a hammock. I was then asked if I had 2" straps. I had 1.5". And 1" for the tarp. The gal on the phone then dropped the subject. I do not know, of course, but I have had some experience dealing with Florida State and Federal bureaucracy and that leads me to believe that absence any Press Release to the contrary the next time 2" straps will be required.

Mmmm Are there any threads on how to do a cheap and easy mod to 1" straps?

Perhaps 24" of 2" strap (for each end) with loops. The 2" touches the trees and the 1" is threaded through on the outside. Any suggestions on 2" webbing that I could get locally (Home Depot, Walmart?) without having to spend money on shipping? May have to go that route, tho.

Timberrr and I camped at Silver River State Park last month and we let them know we were hammock campers. They asked what size straps we had and they were fine with one inch straps.

For years we had avoided state parks going instead to Ocala National Forest or stealth river camping along the Santa Fe.

I'd like to think that a large part of the acceptance of this has to do with the efforts of Samsara and many others who took the time to educate rangers during the 1 year trial period.

One of the reasons that some of the profits of the Florida Hang have gone to support our state parks was the hope that we could, by our example, purchase a bit of goodwill towards the hammock community.

If I were going to hang in a FL. State Park, I would just have a set of 2" straps. Since I use whoopies with a marlin spike hitch, no other adjustments and necessary. When shopping locally, make sure the straps are 100‰ polyester. For an online line source that carries every strap imaginable, go to www.strapworks.com
They will sew loops into one or both ends upon request.
