Hey friends, so I had a chance to try it out last week and it *seems* as if there was no significant damage to the tree. Keep in mind that over a four night camping stay, I had to adjust the position so that the point from which it hung changed once... I dunno if the amount of time impacts how much visible damage it causes the tree, but that was my experience. My phone had died by the end of my stay so I wasn't able to get any pictures. Perhaps if it had been hanging in the same spot, and for longer, there would have been more visible damage. I just don't know!

The issue is not visible damage (though that counts too). The problem is you are crushing the living cambium layer under the dead bark on the outside. That cuts off the tree's sap circulation.
    YMMV

So what everyone is saying don't do it!!!! I thought of the same idea when I first started hanging and I thought it was a great idea too but really doesn't help. Keep tinkering though that what makes the world great.
