    Newbie from Michigan's Upper Peninsula

    Hello Hammockers,

I'm Mike from Michigan's best peninsula (not saying all that much). I've always loved the outdoors, but hadn't done any serious camping since I became an Eagle Scout way back in 1991. Now with two sons working their way up the scouting ladder, and becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster, camping has finally become a big part of my life again. As the boys get older and camping excursions grow from two-night car camping excursions to (eventually) serious backpacking trips, I knew I needed something better for my back than a foam pad.

After some online research and hearing a few second-hand testimonials, I decided to make (for me) a large impulse buy. I got a HH Explorer Deluxe with Hex Rainfly. I didn't have a chance to try it out before a six-night summer camp, so my first experience (and only so far) was six nights straight. Being July I was expecting reasonable weather, but temperatures got down as low as 42F at night. I found my sleeping bag was adequate as low as 55F. It's just a warm weather bag, so I was pleased. As the temperature got below that, I realized I need a good over/under-quilt combination.

By the end of the week I was very happy with the comfort and protection. Sleep was good, and two severe thunderstorms failed to get me or the stuff under my hammock wet. Now I'm looking forward to the wonderful world of modified suspensions, DIY hammocks and accessories, and networking with fellow hangers. I noticed at least a couple people mentioned the Porcupine Mountains, and I'll be there with my Scouts in a couple weeks, so I know there are some in the area!

I've already learned a lot from the many videos and forums here, so thanks!

Welcome from WI. You and tour Scouts enjoy yourselves in the Porkies! I'll get up there someday, soon I hope.

Boy are you in for a treat when you make your first set of whoopie slings, sooo much easier to hang than the system you use now!!

Welcome Shroud. Love the UP and the porkies is one of my favorite places. My first solo backpack trip was in the park, just awe inspiring. HH hangin on the lake superior trail.

Welcome Mike! You live in an amazing place for camping, let alone hammock hanging. One of my first outdoor experiences ever was in the UP. Trees, rain and bugs left a lasting memory that has propelled me into the wilderness since. Keep reading and asking questions. The information sharing is amazing. Very helpful folks on this forum. Enjoy your journey!
