tree strap length ?

Hi all, new hanger looking to build my system.

I'm planning on placing an order with dutchware for amsteel to make my own ridge line and whoppies and tree straps. I plan on using the marlin spike hitch for the connection.
What length tree strap should I go with? I plan on backpacking so I don't want to go with 2, 15' and not sure if 6' will be enough, looking for your thoughts and recommendations.

Also, I'm 215ibs, going to make my own whoopies, is a 12" bury sufficient for my weight?

If your trips are going to be east of the Mississippi River, 6' straps will suffice in all but the rarest of circumstances. Many folks here have a couple of different length sets that they switch out based on a destination they have experience with.

I'm new to whoopie slings myself but, based on what I've read, a 12" bury should be sufficient. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will chime in if I'm incorrect.

at least 6-7' anywhere. a 12'' bury is overkill. you should be fine with 8''-9''.

You could go with two 6' and one 3', all done up with sewn loops on both ends. Use can the two 6' straps regularly and patch in the 3', should you need extra length on one end.

I've had more weight than that on a 10" bury. I would recommend going as long as you want on the straps, the extra can be wrapped around the tree again or whatever. On the other hand, you can use the whoopie slings to extend the tree straps if needed.

I take three tree straps, 3, 4, and 5 feet long. That gives me many options without much weight. Polyester webbing is best as it does not stretch or absorb water. Sewn end-loops rather than continuous loops also save weight, but do increase wear at one spot. Happy hanging!

You could do 8 footers. Loop like normal then MSH where you need it. If you need the full length you have it. The extra couple feet weight wise is nil. I dont know if a couple of amsteel dogbones would be beneficial, maybe, weigh nil too. Alot of options. May carry a few biners too. Just thinking out loud.

Just realized something. Tree straps vs. tree huggers. Just placed an order with Dutch myself and ordered tree STRAPS. They have a sewn loop on one end and cut flat end on the other. Huggers on the other hand have loops on both ends. Just wanted to point this out. Carry on.

I carry a 6' and an 8' strap (note I live in the East) and have rarely needed to extend one. When I do, I use an Amsteel "dogbone" which I always carry to hang my pack, or I run the whoopie through the loop to the MSH. Problem solved.

As far as a bury, 12" is way over-kill. I use 6" or less (on advice of a pro) and have never had a problem, even when I've forgotten to "milk" them.
