New member - Ridgerunner & Spindrift & warmer weather Question...

I'm getting ready to order a Ridgerunner and was hoping for some last minute advice. I would prefer to keep the dew off, but would prefer to not have to pitch a tarp unless expecting rain. Would a Spindrift (double door) be suitable for warm weather moisture protection, while offering a sky view, or would it be too hot during North East Summer months? I'm assuming both doors left open, but then would that invalidate the dew protection?

    Thanks!

Only your own experimentation will really answer your questions for your given conditions.

The good news is, you'll want the Spindrift for colder weather anyway so go ahead and get it and experiment all you want.

Well, the Spindrift should be capable of protecting you from dew but, if the double doors are open, there obviously will be no protection there! The Spindrift is really to add warmth and you'll appreciate that in the colder months. In the summer, the RR with bug netting deployed and a tarp in snakeskins (allows you to hang it easily but deploy it only if really necessary) would probably be your best bet.

What are you going to do about bug protection. Usually the bug net is packed way in the pocket if you have the spindrift on. Would you deploy both? How would you run the suspension for the bug net out of the spindrift?

I think that you could have a gros grain loop sewn to the underside of the Spindrift ridgeline and then use a mini carabiner to hook the bug netting to the underside of the Spindrift ridgeline. Maybe a loop for the head end and also one for the foot end? Should work!

You could do something like that I guess. My personal opinion is that I would rather have the bugnet then the spindrift with or without the tarp. I slept in the RR with no tarp and the bugnet and I did not find that I had a lot of dew. I found that the wind nice too.

The Spindrift is sort of difficult to put on and take off, so, once I have it on, I like to keep it on if possible. I typically use a pad and that is another challenge with the Spindrift on the hammock. I have a custom two door Spindrift on the way that includes a horizontal zipper at the head end (and at the foot end) and sewn in loops as mentioned above. Should be easy to slide the pad in and out without having to dismount the Spindrift. OEM bug net should be useable with the loops and a carabiner.

I have a trip planned for later this week from central Arizona (hot) winding up to Jackson, WY (rainy, cold, some snow) and I will leave that Spindrift on for the entire trip. Should be pretty good in the hot weather and good in the cold, wet weather too. A tarp in snakeskins is going with me too.

I replaced the apex buckle where all the suspension meets with a Dutch buckle. That has greatly improved putting on and taking off the spindrift. If you haven't done this you should consider it.

Thanks. Yep. I have done it and it helps a lot. All Spindrift owners should replace those Apex buckles with Dutch biners without delay! I pickup up that idea here on the forums -- probably from gmcttr -- and appreciated the suggestion.
