    Ridgerunner Suspension Question

I have a Ridgerunner with web and buckles on order. I am thinking of trying out some ENO Atlas Straps on this one.
Will it be OK (or possible) to remove the single hardware piece where the 'V' of the suspension joins with the Amsteel loop of the webbing buckles and larks head a carabiner in its' place?

If I could do that then the carabiner would stay attached to the hammock and I could then clip it into the Atlas strap and shorten my total suspension a few inches without changing the length of the 'V'.

My main reason for considering this is that I like to keep my straps separate from the hammock and by using Atlas Straps I would not have to thread and unthread the straps from the buckles each time.
    I know - it's a minor thing - I've done it for years - but I'm 'just thinking'

I'm asking before the hammock arrives because if I get the Atlas straps ahead of time and it works like i hope I will have a 'never used' set of Warbonnet web and buckles to pass on to someone else.

Yep...many of us have replaced that piece with a Dutch Biner to make it easy to remove the stock webbing suspension.

you dont have to remove the webbing from the buckles, just use a dutch biner and unclip the whole thing, buckles and all.

Do you just let the Dutch biner slide on the amsteel 'V' instead of being larks headed? Doesn't that allow possible shifting of the hammock off center of the suspension?
Also, replacing that connecting piece, and the buckles with their amsteel loop, and replacing them with a carabiner would shorten the suspension about 6 inches on each end. (my secondary reason for possible modification)

I made my own shorter continuous loops so the Dutch biner + CL + cinch buckle = 5.75". The shortest regular biner is about 3" so you could save 2.75" x 2 = 5.5" overall. Not worth it to me to carry bulkier atlas straps and to have stepped adjustments instead of the continuous adjustment of the cinch buckles.

OK - I see the value in that approach. But, according to this, http://www.dream-hammock.com/RopeCalculator.html , the smallest safe loop would lay out to about a 7" long suspension component.
But now I'm thinking that the loop that comes standard with the buckles could be passed thru the single piece, then doubled back to the buckles and larks headed again. That would cut the length in half and allow using a Dutch biner without adding length. It works in my head - after another cup of coffee I'll have to head for the lab.
Or, it that dang hammock would get here i could just go camping!!

The 3 wrap larks head around the cinch buckle uses about 3" of the CL as I recall. Surprising, but true.

I think the buckles that will come with the Ridgerunner are shaped like a modified 'V'. The loop is passed loosely through the buckles with no larks head. So, after trying my idea, I find that the larks head closes down tightly on the 2-piece buckles and prevents them from functioning as they were designed to. But, now I realize that I could make a continuous loop and pass it thru the 2 buckle pieces, then back to the hammock/carabiner. That would shorten the suspension somewhat and allow me a complete disconnect of the hammock from the web/buckles.

You can also replace the warbonnet webbing with a whoopie sling. You can either do your larkshead around the metal trigangle thingie where the 2 dog bones are joined, or you can get get rid of the metal triangle and just larkshead thru the 2 end loops of the dog bone. (personally I wouldnt mess with the atlas straps)
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
