I have a vertes tarp & Kelty 12'X12' to use as my winter home with my clarK nx 250.

has any one studied a way to pitch, putout shape the Winter tarp in terrible weather so to present the last sail like shape that will be turn the tarp to shreds in gigantic winds.

There should be a scientific way to shape the tarp when you set it up so it will dump off the wind.

I hope someone has figured this out.

Vertex: how low can you pitch the sides? Keep the angles as shallow as possible; tie out options. You obviously want to prevent the wind from getting in/underneath the tarp and making it a sail and you'll want the side--wall--angles shallow enough to help deflect the wind over the tarp, rather than push in the sides. Size and shape of tarp(s) play a huge role in this, of course.

There may be ideal geometric shapes for wind deflection with a tarp but the needs of the hammock coverage limit those shapes. The size and shape of the tarp are also limiting. There's only so much we can do. Site selection can help with wind. If the wind is consistent and predictable, you may be able to set one side of the rig into the wind, and keep it the shallowest. If you're packing both tarps, you could perhaps use the Kelty as a primary windbreak, or a door to help keep the wind out, etc.

Thanks Aaron. I do not plan on packing both (the Kelty is HEAVY). I will use the Kelty as my sacrificial, at home protect the hammock from the UV and probably will experiment with pitching shapes.
