Go to local hangs and you will see most of us like to mix it up. We have a lot of great cottage vendors here, and they make awesome gear. I try to stay loyal to the cottage vendors, and less to big box stores. I have lots of gear, and I mix it all up. I just want the best system for which ever type of camping I may be doing, be it hiking, car camping or kayak/canoe camping.

I like to try and make as much of my gear as i can, its usually cheaper although not as good a quality of the cottage vendors but theres just something about using something you've made yourself imo.

IMO i think that some times its easier to use the same brand stuff and buy it all at once.

Mix it up! I mix on purpose to be different and spread the business to more cottage companies

I started out with all Eno stuff cause I didn't know much about hammocking and it was a name I saw everywhere so I thought it would mean better quality.

I still have my DN and am very happy with it. I have whoopies made by Boston (aka BostonGearCo. Or whatever he said lol), tree straps I made (cheaper and lighter than slap straps), I pick up sticks for toggles when I decide to set up, Dutch CRL purchased from Zilla, my tarp is a CF Hex from hammockgear and dyneema/zingit tie outs purchased from and spliced by Spamburglar.
My quilts are both UGQ but I've had outstanding customer service from Paul and Missy when purchasing my UQ and I knew quality would be great so I did seek a TQ from them when I decided to upgrade from my coleman sleeping bag modded TQ to the real deal.

So I think you'll probably find that the longer people are around hammocks the more their kit diversifies and from my experience, most videos on YouTube are people who are just starting out in whatever activity/craft that they're demonstrating and they're excited because they just got their new... whatever... and have no actual experience. (This isn't always the case, there are some experienced folks who take the time to demonstrate their skills for noobs and beginners)
    Just my $0.02

As some one else said just have fun.
    Cheers

Where did you ever get the idea that MOST hangers don't mix gear. I would never have gotten that idea from visiting this forum, actually just the oposite!

I mix up corporate to cottage to DIY and use what works for my current needs. This is one of the draws of hammock camping for me, the ability to make it work however you need to and with whatever is available.
