so you started with 10', so now your max length is 8-9' or so and you're min is 5'? (maybe i'm seeing it wrong though) what's the min distance the hammock whipping can be from the end of the tree strap? seems like this might force you to have to hang from a larger span?
Minimum can be around a foot if you bring the end out closer to the hammock. This system does require a lot more cord to get the full range but is still simpler and lighter without the hardware. I suggest the 7/64 because you are doubled up on the cord on an average hang. On a close hang you do have a lot of extra cord.

Max length is about 1/2 length of line used if buried part is close to hammock

so the taper is just to get it through the eye of the needle or does it have another purpose?
helps get it thru the eye but more important keeps from having an abrupt transition inside the braid that could be a weak point similar to a bad knot

ok, i see now, i was looking at it wrong actually. looks like you can basically shorten it till you get to the point where the bury begins. very cool.

Yes, I guess you could look at it that way. The recommendation for this small size rope (around 1/8 inch diameter) that I've seen would be roughly 9 inches. (3.5 "fid"s, where a fid is 7 x line circumference or roughly 21 x line diameter- This "fid" stuff is a rope braiding term) EDIT NOTE: THE EYE SPLICE NEEDS TO BE LOCKED. SEE THIS VIDEO FOR MORE INFO.

The 10 " bury is at the hammock end. (Imagine a giant slip knot tied next to the hammock.) So when I cinch it all the way up I am roughly 10" from the whipping ( a little more because the OUT point is a few inches from the whipping ). When I extend the loop to the end I get about 5 feet from the whipping (5' to the tree and 5' back to the hammock).

The taper helps with both the treading of the needle and the drawing through the middle. For an eye splice it is very important because it tapers the transition between the bury and rest of the rope thus distributing the stress. If there is a blunt end bury then at the spot where the bury ends the diameter will suddenly change and that will concentrate the force making it a prime place for failure.

P.S. Ahh, yeah, what hangnout said. And sorry, I would like to add hangnout to the list of folks that helped me understand this all.

Does anyone have pictures of this setup? (as far as it being on the tree?)

I had some 7/64 amsteel I had bought a while back. I pulled it out this morning thinking of doing this mod. I then noticed that this cord is 8-strand and not 12. I purchased this from an ebay seller, so all I know is that it was claimed to be "amsteel blue". Doing some research I did find one online seller who stated that the grey amsteel goes to 8-strand when dropping to the 7/64 size.
Yes, the 7/64 AmSteel Blue that I've been using is 8 strand.

My concern is that 8-strand may not "constrict" as tightly in the buried section, and I now have questions about the origin of this cord so I don't fully trust it.
I've had complete success with using it for a whoopie sling and for a UCR. I just did 4 nights of hanging from 7/64 with my toggled suspension with nary a slip. It holds well, IME.

I'm just curious as to whether anyone else has seen 7/64 "blue" in 8-strand?
Again, yes. I expect a delivery tomorrow of some more 7/64 as well as some 1/8 so I'll remake my slings / UCRs with some new material. I'll post if I find any new problems, but I don't expect any.

I don't have a pic, but you can watch Grizz's video that demonstrates the Marlin spike hitch to form a toggle on your tree strap or you can use a biner on the end of your current tree huggers.

Just put the loop on the whoopie sling into the biner or around the toggle

I'll borrow this pic of Frawg's to show the whoopie sling setup.

The difference is that my hammock whipping is where Frawg's second toggle is. He has a separate sling attached to his hammock that I don't have.
