    Trail Days

I made it back to the Trail Days Festival in Damascus, VA again this year. I camped atop Whitetop Mountain and rode my bike on the Creeper Trail from Whitetop Station into Damascus.

Friday night was my last night sleeping on a Thermarest pad and reflectix insert in my HH. That is because while in Damascus I met Adam (Stormcrow) and Jenny at their HG booth and bought a Phoenix 20 underquilt. Saturday night was so much warmer and more comfortable. I have been reading how much better an underquilt would be, but I was not prepared for just how much better it would be!

I also met Dutch and bought new tarp and hammock suspension systems from him. It was a great weekend and I scored great new gear.

My next trip will be with my scout troop in Grayson Highlands in June. We plan to hike Massie Gap, Rhododendron Gap and the Scales, looping back across Stone Mountain and Wilburn Ridge.

    Nice score.
Started out with a pad and still have them as backups for guests, but gotta love the underquilts.
Currently using synthetic UQs but thinking I too would like a phoenix 40 for summer camping.
    Have sherpas, will travel...

I know this is an old thread but I'm hoping you'll see this.... did you hammock camp in whitetop mountain? I'm planning a section hike and I'm hoping to find somewhere to hang around there.
Any tips for where to hang?

    SlowPoca,

If you go to the hammock camping forum you will see a sub-forum called Long Distance travel with a Hammock. There are a couple of recent threads about hammocking on the AT that have a good bit of information in them.

Also, HF members Shrewd and Two Speed have both recently thru-ed the AT using hammocks and I bet they would be willing to answer any questions you may have, although Two Speed just started a thru of the PCT so he may be kinda busy at the moment.

Hope this helps and good luck on your section hike.
