If you have a turtle dog stand picking site will be as easy as asking yourself do I want close to the creek or not. If not here is my breakdown of campsites. Also I would ask about hanging kind of off from the site just to make sure. I didn't have a problem but I was with my parents whose big camper was parked on the site. Also they want you to have something that establishes your site I.e. an easy up awning, a tent, or something that shows you are there, not just camp chairs. Also they are very strict about food storage. Do not leave anything out they will confiscate and/or fine you. There are no showers or water and electric hookups. They is a grey water sink at every restroom building and a water fountain. Lastly I stepped off most of the spots that I could. I have a short stride of about 2-2 1/2 ft. And I stepped off what I would need to hang my ENO doublenest. SO YOUR YMMV. I starred (*) a few sites, meaning they are pretty awesome. I believe from now till like October you must make reservations through the NPS website.

Like I said these are my opinion and YMMV. But if you have a stand of some sort then pick a site and put it on the tent pad and enjoy the temperate rainforest that is the Smokies. If you like wide gentle trails that run next to a large creek/river, I recommend the Little River Trail.

Also the park service is renovating the ghost town summer home cabins of the elkmont logging community. The clubhouse is done and special events are able to be held there. There is a bathroom and the trailheads for the Little River Trail and Jakes Creek Trail as well.

One last thing. There is an amphitheater where rangers do presentations for the public. Check the GSMNP website for the schedule. A couple of years ago I saw one on the Cherokee Indians. It was pretty interesting.

No problem. At the time they J-N loops were closed for maintenance so the gate was closed. It was a nice walk with no people around. J-N is supposed to be open now.

Thank you so much for your hard work! I'll try to look at it today on a computer so I can see things better. Hopefully I'll be able to get something planned out and try to get a few ideas so I can get a site reserved.

What length of straps did you use? That way I make sure I have enough strap to work with.

Wow, you put in a lot of work. I love Elkmont and the Little River Trail, one of my favorite campsites in the Smokies.

I think my straps are about 12 ft. They were plenty long enough for probably 95% of the trees there. I also have like 6 ft. whoopies slings too.
