    Gangen line

I'm a noob. I have a hundred feet of a stiff nylon commercial fisherman's braided nylon cord, that a friend in the industry swears will not stretch. Mine is #72 with a tensile strength of 385# per the clerk at Englund Marine in Astoria, OR, which far exceeds my weight of 160#. Englund Marine has stores along the Pacific coast.

Because it's too stiff for a tautline hitch, I'd have to connect to my tree hugger via a trucker's hitch and to my gathered diy hammock with a lark's head. Would this work for suspending my hammock at 30 degrees?

    Thanks

Safety says a good rule of thumb is 5 times your weight, so I'd say No, it isn't sufficient for you. Dynamic loads, such as when you first sit in your hammock and move into sleeping position, place a higher stress on all lines. Any movement during the night, like a breeze making the hammock sway, will also add dynamic load. 7/64ths Amsteel line has a 1600 # test. Cost for enough to make whoopies for each end is about $10 plus shipping.

Thanks for the prompt replies. 5X seems like a very safe margin--safety has no upper price limit: $10 is cheap. The gangen awaits other uses. I've already made my whoopies.

I like the calculator, but if I don't plan to take my iPod Touch with me, perhaps I can just get it in a spreadsheet that I can print with the only variable being tree distance? Maybe I can search the forum for one.

Olzeke, great suggestion below. I did play with the calculator. 70" at tree-tree of 15' add or subtract 3.5" for each foot further/closer. Thanks.

Or, you can play with the calculator a bit for your ridge line and weight. For me, with trees 15 ft apart, my straps are at 70 inches (give or take) I also know that for every ft further apart, I need to raise the straps 3 inches to get the same results. Makes it easier in the field to step off the distance between the trees, and set the straps close to the right height to begin with. I am 73 Inches tall, so I use that as a starting point.
