    old down bag options....

I inherited my fathers old down bag from the 70's. It still got about 3 inches of loft on the top and bottom maybe 4. Originally it was a 0* bag. Recently I have been comfortable in the 30s with in a tent. It is a rip stop nylon shell with some tiny holes loosing down which I have taped over.

    So here are my options:

    1) fix the zipper and keep it as is.. I'm not too keen on this as I alrdy have. 40,20,0 and -15 bag.

    2) bring it to a seamstress with a diy under quilt plan and have her cut and sew it up. Then I can run the cord though the channels.

    3) have seamstress just patch the holes and remove the zipper and hood turning it into a footied top quilt..

Concerns : its old and I'm not confident enough to sew it myself

    What does the collective say?

I would wash it and try to revive the down first.

Follow good instructions for hand washing and then drying down, and then after that, put it in a dryer with lowest or no heat and an old ragg wool sweater and a couple of tennis balls. you may be surprised how much loft will return and that this bag may still be good as new.

Then you can decide what you need it for.

    Down lasts a long time

The wool creates a lot of static that makes all of the barbs stand out. The same way that a lot of static will make your hair stand straight up. It really helps a lot to fluff up down after washing

Wow.. thanks for tip. I'll definitely be trying this.. just have to use a new wool sweater as I don't have an old busted one.

No need to wash it again. Just try it. Make sure you don't shrink your sweater, no heat if possible.
