how much down is ideal- QU

I'm in the process of making a uq from a old down sleeping bag. The bag is not labeled for how warm it is, but has around 3 inches of loft. My question is: When i cut it open is there an apex point of how much more down I should stuff to get it as warm as possible before going down the road of just adding weight and not more warmth. In other words how much is too much down to overstuff?

    Many thanks!

There's a thread called something like " DIY differential cut underquilt calculator" started by CatSplat that I found helpful when I made my UQ.

Edit: Actually, sorry just realized you're not doing it from scratch, you're just modifying the bag...

Thanks for this; I'll look into it. I'm modifying, but adding down too...

The numbers seem about right;perhaps a bit optimistic. It seems to me that a quilt would need a bit more loft than a sleeping bag to be equally warm, with the much greater potential for drafts with a quilt.

I was talking on the phone with FeatheredFriends in WA the other day and asked about the loft of one of their 30° F bags - 2" per layer.
The MEC Asperity is a 27°F bag - 2.25" per layer
The WM 30°F bag is 2" per layer

Without knowing the area of those sleeping bags, it's impossible to calculate the amount of 'overstuff', I think.

What's the source of the 30% number?

For loft, you could also reference Mors Kochanski. He talks about insulation in Bushcraft. That might help with insulation questions.
