this is a 'pallet base', free standing, hammock stand, that i made for my home, since i can't anchor my hammock to the walls and ceiling.
the goal was to build a free standing stand, with minimum space and free movement, blockage.
it is made from 2 wood pallets, and few 2 by 4's scraps, that i had.
the only thing that i bought were the wood screws, and the bolts.
it turned out to be a fun project, and came out surprisingly stable , (and useful ,since this where i sleep at night).
as you can see in the pics, the 2 pallets were different (the middle base beams were 2x4 on one side, and 4x4, on the other), which affected the structure a bit, but both are equally fine.
the height was determined by the material i had .
it should have the cross beam above head height.
in my case 210cm (6.89 feet).
the distance i made so the posts will be about 2 inches away from the walls.
i tucked foam between the walls and the posts, to protect the walls, but it also added a little bit of stability.
in my case the distance between the walls is 335cm (10.99 feet), which barely allowed room for my 12 foot hammock.
my only difficulty was to shave off a bit from the 2x4 posts on one side, so they would fit inside the pallet slot, but that is because i had no wood plane ,and had to use my mora knife, for the job.
the 2 posts on each side are connected to the pallets with screws.
so are the spacers on the 4x4 side.
the rest is attached with 'standard' size bolts and nuts, don't remember the size. (i made this stand one year ago).
parts list:
2 (full triple base regular) pallets.
4 2x4 posts (ceiling high).
1 2x4 cross beam (room width minus 4 inches).
45 degree angle reinforcement, 2x4's, on both sides. (the longer the reinforcement , more stability, but more blocked space, (depending also on posts height). the longer the cross beam, the longer the reinforcement should be, for stability).
2x4 spacers, as needed.
wood screws as needed.
bolts and nuts and washers. (3 for each side plus one that i used for the spacer on the 4x4 side).
work stages :
1 screw the 2 double posts to the pallets, (both to the base beams, and to the floor plates. )
on both side of the center base beams.
2 screw the top spacers to the posts, and drill the holes for the bolts of the cross beam.
3 make sure the cross beam fits.
4 bring the 2 pallets to position, and mount the cross beam.
5 drill and mount the angle supports.
6 paint if desired (and not done yet).
7 hang happily.
the whole design is improvised based on the material i had.
the 2 posts on one side, for example,were too short, so i had to attache them to the pallet, few inches off the ground, to compensate for that, and it works fine.
you can add a nice base piece on each side, if you like. it may improve stability, but mine is very stable, so i don't need it.
improvement ideas are welcome.
