Does anyone worry about becoming a lightning rod? I've been thinking about stands and talking with friends and we tend to agree that wood would be safer, especially considering lightning can travel 5 miles beyond a cloud edge. Indoor use, sure. Outdoor with guaranteed weather, sure. But seriously.... is this not a consideration?

Not inside a hotel, which is the primary use for mine.
Lightning takes the past of least resistance, usually the shortest path to ground. As long as you are not setting up on top of a hill with no trees, you are probably OK.

I'd still buy one, and I wouldn't worry about lightning since I just need something for my yard and I don't go out in bad weather.

Thumbs is right it takes least path of resistance even if struck by lightening, which is going to be extremely bright and loud. It will travel through the rods and down to the ground not down the suspension to the hammock. I am guessing you may have to clean your shorts out and have one of those "OH MY GOSH" moments, but you will be fine. No different then an aircraft being stuck by lighting. In and back out everyone inside the plane is fine, well as long as the plane doesn't take structural damage. You know what I mean

Exactly, you are safer in a metal stand than strapped to a tree or standing on a golf course.
You are insulated from the lightning by the suspension itself with conductors in the way of the path to ground.
Just like you are protected from the brunt of electrical energy in a car or plane.
