I believe you go to edit post and then hit the delete button, but I have never tried it before.

Just pick up a rock when you take a break or stop to make camp.
The stick works great though. So do trigger point balls.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

How 'bout a short piece of a pool noodle and a stick found at your campsite?

Incomplete solution but I've used my trekking pole to roll the back of my calf while standing or sitting during a rest stop.

Agreed. A pedorthist pointed this out to me when I was on the AT in '11. Use a hiking pole in the same way that you'd use a roller. Make sure it is clean if you are rolling on bare skin. It works best for me if I roll on my legs with long johns.

Both my wife and I use a lacross ball at home to roll out trigger points on our hips, legs, back and on our feet....but don't want the weight of the lacrosse ball when we are hiking.

So, we picked up a couple other balls to try.

    Yellow pokey - 1.9 oz

    Green nubbly - 2.4 oz

Lacrosse ball (for referrence) - 5.1 oz

The yellow pokey is quite squishy but feels nice on the feet, though we found it difficult to get at trigger points. The green nubly ball is quite a bit smaller than the others so it takes so trial and error to get the same spots, but in the end found it quite effective. It works for us, and it will probably be what we take out this summer

For the trail, the obvious solution is to take a water bottle and use it (filled) as your roller.
I have some lacrosse balls for doing this at home, I would think you could find something lighter if that's what you want to take.
Maybe a wooden ball from the craft store?

I carried the stick roller on my transcontinental bike tour earlier this year, and will be using said trekking pole method above for my AT thru starting next month.

I'm also very thankful to have my partner with me on these adventures, as we both have a traveling masseuse with us at all times.
