    DIY Argon Sil Tarp

I was commissioned by a buddy to make a lightweight tarp for his thru of the Long Trail later this summer. We decided on Argon sil. What a labor of love. This thing was a really fun project. I was extremely excited when I got the package and started feeling the slippery goodness that is Argon Sil. Its just a simple hex tarp, 11ft ridgeline with side pullouts. I did a true flat-felled seam on this tarp, which was actually pretty easy. You just gotta keep this stuff taught as it feeds through the machine or it puckers quickly. I spent a good amount of time practicing on scraps before I started on the tarp itself. I laid it out at the climbing gym I work at, which worked great. I could pin straight into the floor. I cut it out and took it home to start sewing. This stuff is slick, but it compacts real well, so sewing the ridgeline was not too bad. I dealt with starting and stopping my stitches by using a scrap of material to help keep tension on the end of the fabric. Otherwise, I had a few issues with the argon getting sucked into my machine because it is so light. I just cut the scrap off afterwards. We decided to put reinforcement patches on all tie outs on the inner side. It is amazingly light at a little over 11oz for the tarp, ridgeline, guylines, dutch bling, and stuff sack. My buddy is pleased, and I don't wanna give him this tarp! I took a few pics of it set up, you can see my ugly assistant in one of them.

That is one nice tarp. Looks well made. And your mascot is there! I was surprised at how easily I was able to do the flat felled seam with this stuff. I didn't know enough when I made my first sil tarp, like 8 months ago, a friend helped me with that center seam. Good work!

Looks great....I have some Argon Sil on the way, plan to do a tarp soon myself. My 1.1 is fine, but wanted to try to lighten up some.

Dumb question that could probably be answered by Google:

What's the weight difference between the argon sil and cuben fiber?
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.

Looks nice! I have some of that sitting here waiting to be made into a winter tarp. It's my first try at a winter tarp so I'm starting out doing one in sil 2nds.

Thanks. I have a 1.1 also and I like this stuff better, so far. Gotta test it out though!

Well, I know there are different weights of cuben, but Argon comes out to 1.06 oz a yard finished weight, I believe there is .34, .51, and .74 oz/yard cuben; still a significant difference.

Thanks. That is probably a good idea. While I didn't think it was extremely difficult to sew, I'm glad I had a couple tarps under my belt already. Good luck!

Your dog is pretty. Your corners of your tarp however, are even prettier. Fantastic job.

I don't wanna give him this tarp!
I can understand why. Below is my favorite out of your pics of this tarp.

    Really nice work!

Were the hems on the cat cut edges difficult to keep neat?
