Smart idea to add some scrap piece at the end of the hem to make it behave!

I just saw this too and can't believe how simple of an idea it is... one of those "well, why didn't I think of that" things.

The 1.1 sil usually means 1.1 before sil treatment. After its around 1.35 or 1.4. That's what my first tarp was, but 1.06 after sil treatment is significantly lighter.

Thanks, although my wife would argue that!

    Really nice work!

Were the hems on the cat cut edges difficult to keep neat?
Thanks, I think I may keep this one and make him another one! As far as the hems go, the ones along the bottom edges were pretty easy, as they weren't cut as much on the bias. The cat cuts going from the bottom to the ridgeline pullouts were more difficult. They have a little twisting here and there.

Yeah, I can't take credit for this one... I owe this little trick to the ladies at the sew shop who are trying to get me to use my sewing skills to provide some testosterone to their quilt classes. They keep trying to get me to make quilts with them, its pretty funny. They are chock full of cool little tricks like that though. They (and my wife) talked me into making a king-size comforter for our bed. Now that was a project! This tarp was a lot less work than that!

Is the scrap piece extra you left on when cutting it out or added after cutting?

Maybe you could use paper rather than fabric so it'd be easier to remove.

    Good idea.
They make a few products for this very purpose - they tear out easily after sewing or dissolve in water.
Water soluble or tear away backing/stabilizer.

This is actually what the ladies recommended at first, but then they told me I didn't have to buy it and could just use scrap fabric. So I'm cheap and thats what I did!
