Black Forest Trail in Pennsylvania: "Thrills, Chills, and Spills"

Last weekend I hosted a backpacking trip to the BFT via the DC Backpackers Meetup. Uphill, a fellow HF member, was one of the brave souls who ventured out in the less-than-perfect weather to explore this rugged trail with me.

As the name implies, we had fun, endured cold weather, and fell a lot. But we had a ton of fun, too!!

I am sharing this from my blog, as it is waaayy too long to type here word-for-word, LOL!

Nice trip report Demeter. The BFT is on my short list, but I want to hit it during the fall foliage. I did the West Rim Trail a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the area. Maybe this October...

Sounds like fun. Perrito and I did the PA Grand Canyon back in October 2012 and had a great time.

I would love to do the West Rim Trail as well. The 30-ish mile trail would be perfect for a weekend. Too many trails, not enough time, LOL!

I bet this area would be a-may-zing during leaf-peeping season. I definitely would like to return to see the hills ablaze...

Very much enjoyed the read, thank you for sharing.

Always learn a little something for the next trip out.

Kudos for working plans b,c,d,etc. Have been on too many trips where folks are rigid to "the plan" and don't adapt to the circumstances. Nice to find a group wise enough to evaluate the situation and make reasonable decisions.

Pa's Grand Canyon is on the list for this year.

That is a great writeup. I can see myself there while reading it. My wife and I have done a few miles on the bft the last 2 years with her father, uncle, and grandfather. We have been averaging about 15 miles a year.
As a wise man once said "If woman don't find you handsome at least they'll find you handy." Hang in there.

A few years ago I provided support for an attempted thru hike of the BFT in less than 24 hours. About six people tried and two actually succeeded. It was an amazing day.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

In my handful of trips, I don't think I've ever managed to stick with Plan A. It sounds like a good trip. A challenge is easier to meet with a good group of friends. Thanks for the great write up.
