Is it feasable? Double layer hammock with down fill between layers

I know the go to solution for warmth is an underquilt or a bad. I was brainstorming the idea of a double layer hammock with down sewn between the layers instead of a pad. It would be permanently in there, but it is always near freezing where I camp, regardless the time of year.

The idea was to make a double layer hammock and add down between the two layers. Body weight would only put pressure on the top layer, leaving the down and bottom layer free from compression. Are my thoughts wrong on this? Would the down still compress between the two layers?

You would have to have a differential between the layers while still maintaining contact between the down and bottom layer. I could work... I beleive fireinmybones has made some hammocks with integrated insulation.

If only I could find that hammock that is essentially just a floating sleeping bag now.

You will have to wash your down more often than in an underquilt. That's the main reason I wouldn't do it.

A quick search for "insulated hammock" using the search box at the top of this page brings up 1215 threads, many of which address the exact question you asked. Ideas about them have evolved significantly, but it's a good idea to start with HF co-founder and former mod, Just Jeff's web site tothewoods.net, where you'll find a great discussion of hammocks and insulation.

Don't be fazed by the amount of information available. You're still to be congratulated for coming up with the idea on your own, and you'll find inspiration as well as instructions. Keep thinking, and remember the words of Harrold "Dynamite" Payson (a boat-builder), "Don't use your own head when you can use somebody else's."

I remember passing on it because of the weight.

The Argon Cloud Can't believe I remembered that.

As to making one - I can't help you there.

I was kicking around the idea of doing something similar but insulating by sewing poncho liners in between the two layers. Still not perfect but it would add some warmth.

Also using a poncho liner or other pre-sewn layer prevents down from bunching up.
