no hangable trees in back yard but wanna hang there!

Well i have one tree in my back yard, a huge oak tree about 6 to 8 feet around and i think this is too big for my straps... but i guess i could make or buy a strap as big as i would like. My plan though is to sink two post in the ground and just use the bit oak as a shade tree for afternoon/after work hanging. I"m thinking using two 4x4x12 post with 3-4feet in the concreted into the ground, maybe even make a L or brace the bottom portion then concrete it in for support. Or would this be overkill? Has anyone done this? If so please give feed back!

I'm facing the same issue. I thought I had something that would work, but trees are 30' apart and even if I put the tree straps up with a ladder I can't get them high ehough to get a correct angle.

Academy sports has a hammock stand for $60 that looks like it may work. You can also build one with two 2x4x10 and, two 2x4x8, and two short braces so that you end up with this: \___/ with the ends angled back. Those are less permanent than concrete and 4x4's. I was toying with the idea of concrete myself also. My thought was to wrap aluminum foil around a 4x4 bottom and pour concrete around that. That would make a box in the concrete that the post can be removed from, so theoretically you could do this at or below grade so you can have everything flush with the ground. I think if you do that route, 8' is probably tall enough for the posts, so using a 10' with 3 ft of sunk end would give you about 7' of post, which if you space them 15' a part, that's about right for a regular hammock

I second the turtledog stand. Then you can use it inside also.

Do not use 4x4 post, they will break ( know from first hand experience). Use 6x4 or 6x6 post.

I had one good tree and used the tree for one end and a step ladder for the other - suspension went over the step ladder to a large stake in the ground. Worked well for years, then I built a Turtle Dog stand.
I recommend you just build the Turtle Dog stand. Easy to pack and go for car camping and you can use it inside.

I got a $80 commercial hammock/hammock stand as a gift. The stand was too short for any regular hammock - it only worked with the bridge hammock that came with it. Make sure the hammock stand specifications meet your requirements prior to purchasing one.

I used 1" threaded pipe. 4@3', 2@ 6', 2@8', 2x 90s, 2x ts, and 1x 1" coupler. took about ten minutes to screw it all together. I have seen others here with the same setup.

head on down to homedepot or lowes. pick up 2 6' steel closet poles. swing on by he bolt section and pick up a couple eye bolts. then pick up 4 2' pieces of rebar and a 2x4 and last but not least get 2 lumber spikes.
