wow, looks like its half of a marlin splice with the tails tied in a knot.

    Thats pretty cool.

nacra mentioned he uses a lanyard knot. If you type that (or diamond knot) into wikipedia, you'll find directions on how to tie it.

I've been using these since nacra first brought them up last summer. I keep a couple on each pack, and have carried one in my coat pocket all winter. They do come in handy, and weigh nothing (amsteel). I find that just a good tight overhand knot works well, but it is important to make sure the adjustable eye closes up tight when under load. I have hung from them, and used them as tie loops on the truck to secure loads. They work great!

I will pull two shackles, one from 7/64 Amsteel and one from 3mm Lash-It, both with a diamond knot as a stopper, in an MTS machine sometime this week to get the failure load and see how/where they fail. Is there another stopper knot that I should test while I'm at it?

I'm using an overhand knot as well, mostly just for simplicity. I feel like the fail point with this one would be the knot slipping, but that's a total guess. If you don't mind trying a loop with an overhand that'd be great, but if not I'll be content with the results from the diamond knot. I'll be interested to see those test results. Thanks, Schneiderlein.

Do you want just a single overhand knot, or a double?

What a great first post. I can't believe I missed it and am glad that it made it back to the surface.

One example of a use of these is in place of a biner in a WBBB strap setup.
Good simple instructions. I'll give this a try tonight.

Now, I can see how they can be used as biners but...

You could use a loop shackle to connect your whoopie sling or UCR to a loop sewn at the end of your tree strap instead of using the marlin spike hitch.

Will you test the Ashley (oysterman's) knot as the stopper?

    Thanks!
