If because of slippage, would increasing the length of the buried portion increase the holding power enough to make the half-hitch un-necessary?

What is the length of your buried portion?

For the Whoopie Sling, Samson Ropes recommends that the buried portion be equal to 3 1/2 fids, so for your 1/4" diameter rope, they recommend the buried portion be 18 3/8". It is hard to tell from your pictures the length of the buried portion.

B/C these are not whoopie slings, they do not work like whoopie slings and don't have the same rope dynamics or constriction mechanics involved. I tie a simple half hitch as a "lock" for the constrictor section..... simple, quick and very easy to undo. Sometimes it will creep a little on you, so I put a simple lock on it for insurance.

As for how I attached mine to a tree... I build them with 2" eye loops on each end. To attach one end to a tree, you make a choker using an eye loop, just like with the webbing straps "huggers" that I've seen on this site. (I never even knew about huggers before)

You CANNOT use webbing to make one of these... it will NOT work. You could do a choker with a UCR onto the loop of one of the hugger straps... that would be very simple and wouldn't require a beener.

I may be daft, but I just cannot picture how this works. Anyone able to diagram it out for me, how you use this thing and how it holds? It looks brilliant.

I'm still not entirely clear on how long you make the buried portion?

If that isn't proprietary, could you post the length you use for for the buried portion? I believe that's what you refer to as the constrictor section. That's a better term than buried portion.

I'm still concerned about the affect on trees with these ropes, I'd like to learn more about them.

My idea was to buy one of these, cut it in two pieces and put the UCR through it... this has to take a load of the bark, what you think?
