Sometime the fun is in the creative process, rather than the finished product.
I had the shell of an old down sleeping bag left after re-purposing the down into Topquilts. I hated to throw it out so one night last week I decided to make whatever I could from the pieces that were left. I ended up with what I am calling my hammock ‘Thneed’ as an homage to Dr. Seuss’ birth date of March 2.
It's not really an UQ, not really square and not really...well not really anything in particular.
I didn’t measure too closely or even bother to make the edges straight, I just folded it in half, sewed a seam and then cut off what was left over. The wings were made of the two pieces that were left. The main body measures 39"(at the head) / 26” wide (at the foot) x 40” long, it is sewn through design with 1.5” of loft and stuffed with about 4.8 oz of 550 FP truffula down. Total weight is 14.85 oz (truffula down is heavy you know).
The wings are 5” wide each and the pointy ends came about because I got careless when cutting the fabric. I finished it off with lighter material for cinch tubes to make it match my two TQs.
While it doesn’t do as many things as an actual Thneed, it works as:
1) Extra torso insulation under TQ for 4am chills to extend TQ temp range
2) Extra layer between a hammock and UQ for more core warmth
3) Leg and foot insulation in the hammock
4) Summer UQ - Small but since it is summer the TQ will fill gaps with warmth
5) Pillow for my head (rolled up)
6) Pillow for under my knees
7) Torso wrap for under my jacket on those frosty mornings
8) TQ for my youngest
What else could I use this for?! I guess I’ll find out.
Cheers
