I use tree straps for my hammock.
I can see that people dont want to damage the trees and keep on the good side of parks etc, same as me. I want to keep them healthy and dont want to make thing harder for others by causing any damage to anything.
But the use of a whoopie on a tree is not going to cause any damage unless your doing something seriously wrong, or intentionally causing damage.
Its a fine line between a cuddle........
and holding her down so she cant get away.

My only point is that the hang time is nearly irrelevant compared to the forces subjected to the tree. Looking forward to some pics of your setup ,

Oh yeah forgot to mention we have a traveling "Krammock" somewhere. It's a small hammock with a hole in the middle like you mention. Fellow hanger ThirstyBear made it and I signed it with the location and passed it on to another hanger. They were supposed to sign it at their next hang with it's location and pass it on as well. It died off but ya never know it might poop, I mean pop up somewhere!

If I've deciphered your description correctly, you have made a whoopie sling with the adjustable loop interrupted with either a whoopie hook or a biner. Is this correct?

You could also use a UCR, wrap it around the tree and clip it back to itself as you would do with a tree strap and save a couple of feet of rope.

I don't buy into the whole tree damage thing either. Ever see trees used as fence posts for barbed WIRE fences? They secure the fence to the tree by wrapping the wire tightly around the trunk instead of using a fence post. The tree will then actually grow over the wire and absorb it into itself after years of growth. Also bucks rub their antlers up and down the trees trying to get all the velvet off of their antlers every year. Trees seem to be very resilient organisms, to the point that I doubt a little soft fabric rope is going to bring them down.

Strangely enough, your opinion on whether a whoopie will damage a tree or not is irrelevant. It's what the parks department wants and what their arborists think. And so we use straps.

You can of course do what you want on your own or other allowed private lands.

It only takes milliseconds to collapse the inner bark that transports sap. Maybe if you are really fast.... Otherwise use straps not thin cordage around the tree with any significant load.
    YMMV

Not spreading hate or discontent, but wouldn't a gram weenie forgo a "poop hammock" and just pop a squat as nature intended?
