My pit Yogi has learned how to hammock. He will now jump in or out on his own. I don't put boots on him, I usually have reflectix or a sleeping bag in the hammock. He sleeps part way on me, or we spoon.

You can put a pad on the ground to help insulate them, however I wouldn't go winter camping with a poodle because they only have a single coat unlike northern dogs that have the double coat.

I was just about to post this same question the other day.

I would really like to start taking my chocolate lab out with me but unsure if I should just bring her bed and a blanket or try and squeeze her into the hammock. Going to try a car camping place first so if she doesn't do well I cam just take her back to the car to sleep.

Maybe my dogs are extra lazy? I've not been kicked yet, especially not by the bigger one (chow mix). He's too laid back.
Yes, this is more or less what I plan to do when it's warm, while it's cold they're staying with me.

Nails worry me for my smaller dog, so I just pick her up and set her in, but her nails are kept pretty trim as well. The larger dog is very gentle, and they both only seem confident enough to use me to grab onto, not the hammock.

Until this last trip (Fl Sherpa Hang) my three dogs have slept in the hammock with me. 2 chihuahuas (4 and 6 lbs), and a 24 lb chunky, old mutt. She's incontinent now, so I experimented with a small tent.

For larger dogs, a cheap backpacking tent from om, say, Walmart would do.

I got two of these (not same brand) picnic food covers (36" long) for about $7/each from, I think abc distributing (or Collections etc.). The mesh is no see'um, but the drawback is there's only a soft square of Velcro at the bottom. I hand stitched the doors about 3/4 of the way down and then used safety pins for the rest. Used Velcro on the other one.

Sewing a zipper would be best, but fiddly.

I used to fuss and got him his own tarp, set up like a little lean-to, over his blue foam pad. Since he's up half the night running around after coons anyway, I quit that and just set his pad up under my hammock and tarp. If it's colder, I will start him off by laying my wool field shirt over him, but if he gets up and it falls off, he's on his own. Absolutely no way I'd sleep with a dog (or anyone else, for that matter, to include my wife) in a hammock.
