Question Cheap Mesh Hammock for Underquilt Suspension?

Newbie here, looking into diy underquilts. Thinking a cheap nylon or poly mesh hammock, the $5-10 variety, could be used to support a sleeping bag or quilt as an underquilt (basically a mesh undercover). My thought is that it might work well for keeping the quilt in good contact with the hammock. Quick (possibly insufficient) search revealed nothing insofar as prior examples, so can someone tell me why this won’t work or is ill-advised so I can get on to other ideas. Or if this has been tried, would like to hear how it went.

I dont see any reason why that would not work.

Might be a little hard to readjust in the middle of the night. Also, you may want to go for stretchier mesh than not. It may be lighter to just make a DIY mesh hammock with stretchy mesh/netting.

Good Idea. I may steal it.

Wait - what if one were to combine that with a TED bugnet? That could be something...

Can you actually stuff a down UQ in a double layer? I imagine it would compress the material immediately.

oh I'm sorry I meant quilt or sleeping bag as per the OP's original question. I don't think putting them in a double layer would work well.

I'm using a 3/4" layer of light poly quilt padding in between layers for my everynight double DIY gathered end hammock. I just made the bottom layer about 3/4" longer when I gathered the ends to eliminate compression. Keeps my butt warm.

For a sleeping bag or quilt that's full length, it would take some playing with to get the difference in length worked out but it's definitely do-able.

I think what people are missing is compression between the netting and hammock. With a Quilt or double layer the insulation hangs from the hammock and can easily expand downward. If you try to hang one hammock under the other the top hammock will try to compress the insulation against the bottom hammock. Easily compressed materials like down will collapse into thin spots before the net hammock will stretch. If you hang the net hammock too low to allow for some compression you will likely get cold spots from air gaps.
    YMMV
