    Helping some Scouts

I am so excited I just had to post this. I am a Webeloes Den Leader and have spoken to some of my parents on campout a about making gear. While at the last camp out, a dual camp out with a Boy Scout Troop, I brought my hammock set up with my turtle dog stand and it was quite a hit. Last week I got a call from the Scout Troops Leader and asked if I would come and demo my gear for a upcoming trip. 14 boys want to make hammocks to go to Sea Base in FL. I can't tell you how excited I am to help spread the word to a bunch of great, smart and motivated boys. We are doing hammocks, tarps, underquilts, whoopie slings AND tree straps. I see a nice order coming for ripstop by the roll and Dutch.

Just a quick question: where are they planning to use the hammocks at Sea Base? When I was there, you only spent two nights on base, both times in the bunk houses. I recall very few trees and other hanging spots. You might get one hammock strung up on a boat, but they're all around 50' and have little unoccupied space.

    Either way, get 'em hangin!

Over. I have no idea I have never been there. They seem to think they have a place to hang but thank you for the heads up I will have them do a bit of location research to make sure they are ok. They really neat thing is not only are they going to hang, but hang DIY style.

you could always build some triple-tripod 3-hammock turtle dog stand sort of things. Guess with 14 boys and you that makes 15. That would be 5 "triple turtles" but something always goes wrong or breaks in transportation... so make 6.

It might be cheaper to set up a set of YATS stands. Not so much "hardware", mostly ropes.

It worked well for our camp.

You may not need stands unless you stay at the base, relatively few trees to hang from at Brinson Center. If you attend the Out Island Adventure, you'll have plenty of mangrove trees to hang from! We had two crews (14 total) who all hammocked in the mangroves on Munson Island! A couple Scouts even rigged together very long suspensions to get that "perfect" spot close to the beach with spectacular views and breezes! Tarps were a necessity with afternoon rain as well as a bug net. It was a great experience...enjoy!

Don't forget the bug nets. No matter what the previous days temperatures if the temp hits 70 the no-see-ums and mosquitoes come out!
