Although I agree with the concept of helping to prevent the suffering of any living thing in the case of choosing which products we use, the resultant byproducts of the manufacture of polyester based insulation pollute the air and ground water around the facilities in which they are produced. This pollution harms the health of the all of the animals around these production facilities (including humans). I'd also add that most of the people that live near factories like these only do so because they cannot afford to live elsewhere.
In this case it would seem that the lesser evil is to use the byproduct of an animal that is being eaten by somebody else that is not vegan, since the animal will be slaughtered for food anyway, rather than to pollute an entire area and every living thing in it.
Unless you are using a product that requires no chemical manipulation whatsoever, the effect it's production has on ground water harms many animals, and has the potential to destroy entire ecosystems. This is magnified in countries that have little environmental protection oversight, which is consequently where most synthetic insulation is produced.
Not to get on a soapbox or anything, but if you are using insulation of any kind that you are not producing naturally from all natural materials, you are going to have a negative impact on the life of some earthling, be it human, animal, or both.
Fear is the mind-killer.
We're getting a bit off-topic, and like you, I don't want to start an argument, since the main topic was really about whether it's OK to mock vegans and their beliefs.....but....
All those statements I quoted could apply to 'modern' industrialized agriculture as well....
Way too many humans for this planet...something's gotta give.
