    UQP - Ground Cloth

Has anyone used a breathable UQP as a ground cloth in case you had to go to ground? I plan on taking mine on my next trip but I'm hoping it'll double duty just in case. I also have a gossamer gear poly sheet that I've trimmed down but it's a 2.5oz penalty.

My next trip is in uncharted territory and there's probably less than a 20% chance I won't find trees. I hate preparing for the worst, but....

As far as protection from scratches and whatnot you'll be okay, but any moisture from the ground will seep through and dampen whatever is on top; if it rains, it will probably soak whatever is on top.

I personally wouldn't risk sleeping on an expensive underquilt protector. If you are preparing to sleep on the ground I assume you will have an emergency sleeping pad? Why not just use the pad without a ground sheet?

He's not asking about an UQ

Oop I meant to say UQP not just UQ. I edited it for clarity.

Thanks for the feedback. It confirmed really what I already suspected in that I'm better off taking the poly ground cloth. I'll just have to cut the 2.5ozs somewhere else.

While it shouldn't be too hard to find trees (though I don't know the area you're headed into, so that might just be incorrect, seeing as how it's based on east coast experience), what do you use for rain gear? A poncho will do just fine as a groundsheet and is my preferred rain gear when hiking anyway.

If you're on a bike (and your handle leads me to suspect you might be), just bite the 2.5 oz if you're that worried. It isn't going to kill you, especially if it's strapped to the bike rather than your back.

    Just a thought.
