Question for you tarp makers out there

Hey everybody, Hoping to get some experienced DIYers input here...

I'm getting ready to put my tarp on a diet. My wife and I hang under a Kelty Noah 12 and, well, it's hefty... My plan is to cut off all of the heavy tie-outs it currently has on it and replace them with some gross grain (perhaps) and D-rings to lighten it up a touch.

So anyone who's made their own tarps…
    - What size gross grain did you use for the tie-outs? 1/2 inch?
-Has anybody hand-sewn them on? If so what stitch did you use? (I don't have access to a fabric welder)

I'm finishing up with the new guylines now and I'm hoping to do this mod sooner rather than later.

Any and all input is welcome and appreciated!

I have a Noahs Tarp 12 too that I don't think worth butchering in order to save weight. Change the cords and stakes and call it a day - I don't think you'll save enough weight by replacing the tie-outs to make it worthwhile. Enjoy it for what it is and move on to a tarp made of lighter fabric when you can.

+1 What he said. I have a Noah 12. Move on to a lighter silnylon tarp.

+1. Changing the tie out's is going to be such a minimal change you wont even notice.

Either look at getting a smaller tarp (Noah 9 - $60), or move away from PU coated to Sil (Cheapest being about $85)

We'll I guess I see where that stands. Thanks for your input everyone

But for the sake of the intent of my post, I don't suppose someone could humor me and divulge the information I'm seeking as well... ?

For a large and heavy tarp, I'd use at least 3/4" if not 1" grosgrain. Use 100% polyester thread and google hand stitching for correct stitches.

Like the others, I don't think you're going to save much weight...especially adding d-rings. I doubt you'll save more than an ounce if that.

Yeah, I added my guylines today and thought the tieouts were heavier duty than they actually are.
Been a while for that tarp
    Thanks for humoring me
