    Elna Automatic machine

Hey, I stumbled my way into an older Elna machine like this one for next to nothing (which makes me feel good given the price on the one linked below). It runs pretty well, but skips some stitches here and there. I need to have it serviced. Does anyone know anything about them?

    Nice find!
I don't have one of those, but have a couple of older (than your) Elnas in my 'collection'.
    I like mine a lot.

Do you have a new needle in your machine?
Is the machine threaded properly (the thread needs to be 'snapped into' the bobbin holder on my Elnas)?
Same (new, good quality) thread in the bobbin and top thread?
What test fabric are you using?
Does it skip on straight stitch as well as zig-zag? What about straight-stitching with the needle offset (right or left position)?

It could be a timing issue (which would need a tech unless you are handy) but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion immediately.

Perhaps some more details, and a close-up pic of your stitching problem will help the expert sewers here (not me!) give you better advice.....

There is an Elna Yahoo group "elnaheirloomsewingmachines" which should have the user and adjusters manuals for your machine in their files. Between the two you should be able to get your machine straightened out. Good luck

If you haven't already, start with a thorough cleaning of the bobbin area. it only takes a small amount of lint or wrapped up thread to make a machine skip stitches.

    +1
That makes the most noticeable difference in stitch skipping. Start with that.
Other cleaning and oiling just makes it run smoother and with less effort.

Thanks guys! This was literally my first few stitches with it, so entirely possible that the machine needs a good cleaning. I did have new thread (and the same thread) top and bottom, so at least that wasn't the problem.

This is the only Elna I have ever used, and it's definitely different than my newer Singer!

I'll check out that Yahoo group as well.
