So after all that I've decided to go with the Blackbird because it seems easier to backpack with, looks plenty comfortable, and is easier to fit under a rainfly. Thank you all for all your input! I should have plenty of time to fiddle around with insulation and find something that works for me. I'll put my final set up in a new thread when it finally happens. Super psyched!

    My experience ...

I've experimented with both a RidgeRest CCF pad and Reflectix in both a WBBB and a WBRR.

    1) I wasn't impressed by the performance of the Reflectix alone. Didn't seem to help much.

    2) The RidgeRest CCF (Closed Cell Foam) pad worked better in the WBRR. The main problems with using it in the WBBB were:
    - The most important part -- the part under your shoulders -- was a bit difficult to ensure that it was placed under your shoulders. Before getting in, you need to arrange the pad -- and get in gently.
    - Cold feet aren't good either. I found that, no matter how careful I was when getting in, it was rare that the foot part of the pad didn't move a fair amount from where I wanted it. If you are planning on using a separate foot pad, this part is irrelevant to you.

I found that in the WBRR, the things didn't move hardly at all -- it wasn't really a problem.

While I prefer the softer feel of an UQ, I've successfully used the foam pad/Reflectix combo I think down to at least 30F.

If so, for me it is a no brainer: any bridge hammock works much better with pads than any non-bridge I have tried. In fact, it works good enough with pads to often tempt me to use them instead of UQs. Them again, bridge hammocks tend to work great wit UQs also, IOW they are extra easy to insulate.
I couldn't agree more and I've owned the Blackbird and several other "regular" hammocks. I too am considering going to just a pad system (NeoAir Xlite) even though the UQs do work very well. I've had my RR for about a year now and since then none of my other six hammocks have seen the light of day. Yes...it's that comfortable and hassle free. I would gladly tote the slight extra weight, even on a thru hike, in return for all the advantages of the RR.

Since you already made your choice I'm just throwing this out there for others to consider.

I agree Miguel. The comfort of the RR combined with the saddlebag storage is worth any weight penalty. LOVE MY RIDGE RUNNER!!!

Lol. I only carry my bowling ball on trips that are less than 30 miles round trip, but even then, the RR is worth it. ;-)

Figured out my insulation. I'll be doing a 1/4" and 1/8" thickness landau CCF foam so I can send the 1/4" home when it gets warmer. I'll be able to cut them to my exact specifications which is awesome. For any looking for fairly good prices on CCF foam, this is what I found:

Can you explain what the different choices for foam are at the link you provided?
