Thought there must be an easier way....only just found the multi quote button....that's a whole lot easier.
Cheers mate, we do have quite a few colloquial sayings,
it might have something to do with colonial convict past and English roots.
Those tensioners work on a leverage system, trapping the line.
You get glimpse of them in action around 3:10 minute mark....
..here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=87QleLVvseA.
Make sure you thread them through the right way or they won't work, as I
found out on my first try.
Might have have a go at making my own, out of aluminium tubing
with smaller holes.
3 layers all up...strips to hold the D ring in place, then that pink,
origami looking shape(in the link) to cover the strip front & back.
All are different lengths so they're not ending in the same place, providing
a tear point. Hope that makes sense.

Time for another diy tarp....almost made it to 10years.
The two thin outer layers have separated from the inner mesh.

Wow, what a pro move, necro'ing your own decade old thread. Would you change anything? Will there be a photo tutorial of the next one? Side-entry...?
It was just a final update on the longevity of cuben/dyneema fabric used in my tarp...roughly 24-36 overnighters per year over a 9 year period. With the occasional bike camp thrown in.
Info may be of use to those thinking about spending their hard earned...
Shape will be the same on the next version, minimal, like the 3 tie outs per side when hunkered down, no 'd' rings next time will experiment with just dyneema.
Pockets to tuck away the tieouts are staying.
May add a couple of small doors @ the head end(where the speader bar is) for when the wind & rain changes direction in the middle of the night.
To fold or stuff into your pack is a personal choice, I started of folding then changed to stuffing as me & the tarp aged.
Also want more room while sitting under the mosquito netting, hiding from a cloud of whining mozzies so will experiment there.
Don't let it whip & flap around in the darkness...the surface material goes all fluffy & ages quicker.
Will recycle the ol' faithful into a undercover...
