    What ratio for gear hammock

I've seen some gear hammocks and figured it might be a place to start a DIY project. The one I saw was 4 ft long but didn't give the width. I figure I'll want a flap to go over it for rain cover - using coated nylon. I see these come per yard in about 5 ft lengths. So I thought if I bought 2 yards, and sewed a channel for 3 feet, that would give me a 3 x 5 foot hammock with 3 feet left on the side as cover flap.

I searched for Hammock Ratios to see if there was a general Length to width relationship people used, but couldn't find anything. Of course my project is just to hold gear - like a backpack or it and its contents in the hammock while at camp.

Any recommendations on fabric weight - like 30D vs 70D?

Do you think my 5 ft long x 3 ft wide with 3 ft flap would do the job or does the size need adjusting?

For our hammock chair...little bit diffent animal...we do 4 foot wide by the width of the fabric...the width is longer closer to 6 foot so we turn it and use that as the ends so the 4 foot becomes the width when your sitting in it like a chair. Of course those are the rough cuts, so subtract the hems and end channels and your in the ball park of the finished chair. To use it as a gear hammock I would go about the same size...I have used the chair as a gear hammock in fair weather without the weather flap or string it under the tarp beside or under my hammock. I would make the flap oversized from the hammock by a bit. I would want the ends where the gear hammock gather up covered by the flap along with draping a good bit over the far side from where it attaches to the hammock body. A couple small pockets on the bottom side of the flap to add some weight to keep the flap closed in a breeze would also be something to think about adding to the design.

I have one of ^his^ hammock seats, it's about the same size roughly as my mollymac gear box (gear hammock), minus the rain flap of course. Both great pieces of gear.

How wide is the flap on the GearBox?

What kind of thread is used for DIY - like Nylon vs cotton? I'd think the stronger tread would be obvious but a friend pointed out that some are no domestic sewing machine friendly. And, after all, with a hammock, it is usually the material and suspension line - not the stitching - that is holding the weight.

Just smashed one out earlier today to giveaway on the forums. Think the dimensions were 60" x 25" before hemming and channels. I'll post pics tomorrow.

100% Polyester thread has the strength, rot and UV resistance you need.

Gutermann Mara 70 is one favorite thread used by many of us that works well with home machines.

Thank you for the info on the thread. I like that the shipping fee will be less than the cost of the thread.

What is the size of the Molly Mac gear hammock? I'm curious about the "bed" width and the size of the over-flap?
