    Hammock hot tent

Has anyone tried making a hammock hot tent? I have seen all of the YouTube videos but I just wanted to get some feedback from someone who has had hands on experience. I am thinking of trying to build a fire blanket fireplace and have my tarp around it with my hammock inside. Does anyone have any foreseeable danger with this plan? Here is a video link with someone else who is doing it without a hammock.

Check this thread from Smokehouse https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...highlight=tent

Fallkniven uses something very similar with a Ti Stove, check his gallery.

Thanks Rat Dog, Have you seen anyone who doesn't use a traditional stove?

The fire retardant material is a bit heavy and many hammockers tend to be backpackers or lightweight car campers.

Not to mention more and more state parks are going to fire ring only so it limits building a reflective wall in some cases. Need to really get out into the woods to take advantage of a setup like this imho.

I would be up for using it using with my wally world tarps but don't want to burn holes in my silnylon.

The obvious exception that comes to mind is Fallkniven though I am sure there are others.

+1 I saw Fallkniven's setup in use last year at the NJ Winter Hang. Talk about Tarp Envy.

One way I have gotten around the fire issue getting into the tarp or if the area has fire ring restrictions is to gather large rocks, which in my area tend to be limestone that are not wet and build my fire and set them around the fire after a while they will get piping hot. simply dig a shallow trench and bed it with ground cover to give a bit of insulation both on top and bottom and hang your hammock directly over or to the side of the rock line. With a tarp pitched tight to the ground it will act as a radiant heater with out any of the issues with having flames around your tarp. if you have a couple sets of rocks you can have one heating while the one is in with you warming the area up switch out in the middle of the night if necessary. A tad labor intensive but sometimes those are the bones.

The main concern with an open fire inside an enclosed shelter is having enough draw to clear the smoke from the shelter. Also with open fires you tend to use more wood than using a small woodstove.

I use a canvas wedge hot tent that I string my hammock through. I have that paired with a 10"x10"x18" sheet metal stove and stove pipe. It works amazingly well.

Here is a video showing my setup. I use a different stove than the one shown in the video.

The canvas wedge has a big weight penalty, but, it is hard to beat sitting in your hammock with a temperature difference of 25-30C above the outside ambient temperature. Hauling things on a toboggan also makes life easier too.

    Cheers

    Brian

You could build an ammo box stove and run it on pellets. Put a 90 in the pipe and run it out between the top of the tarp doors, insulate with carbon or fiberglass where the pipe goes thru the doors. Should be a $50 project

Now if the thinkers in our forum can figure out a way of doing this with the metal fireplace ring that the parks use.....

teepee. You make a small fire in the center and the smoke plumes out the top. It's how the Indians lived. You'd have to sleep on the ground, or get a big teepee and hang off the uprights.
