    Webbing: Sewn Loop vs. Knot

I'm making a buddy a hammock for Christmas and want to provide him with tree huggers. I have some hardware store 1" webbing that shows a working strength of #400lb so it should be sufficient to hold him but I don't have a way to sew a loop in the end. Can I use a simple overhand knot to make a loop in the end to pass the webbing through? Will the knot significantly weaken the webbing?

    great question.

will be checking out this thread.

Do you have a dry cleaner nearby? They usually have a seamstress on site.
    Just a thought.....

I really don't think either of us care about having an "ugly" knot when we throw a strap around a tree in the woods.

The only time I've had a tie-down strap fail, it was at the seam where it was stitched together. I'm debating having a sew shop sew some loops or if it really matters at all.

Using a Nylon Taffeta Tablecloth for the hammock with whipped ends and Whoopies or a set of descender rings with the webbing.

The tree huggers should not be nylon it stretches too much and I though most tree straps were rated between 900-1500#

I don't know that the straps are nylon. What I planned on using is a cut in half tie down stap from the local hardware. It has a tag by the existing cam buckle that says 400lb working & 1000lb break strength. Any way to tell nylon vs poly? Is this questionable for a 185lb guy? Running late on time to order straps. Need to source locally.

A 400# wll is about as low as you can safely go, and many here would find that unacceptable. A knot in the webbing will lower the will by "x". Will you get away with it? Probably maybe. It's your call, but not nearly good enough for this old back.

Agreed, I believe polyester straps stretch the least. Most straps are rated higher to have a 5x or 10x for margin of safety.

Currently, I use 1" cargo straps rated about 500lbs + or -. I made them 3 years ago and still use the original. I also hand sewed the loops before I got a sewing machine.

Careful. As Sgt Rock has stated- "Your gonna DIE!"

Yes, a knot will work, but it will reduce the breaking strength at the knot. Your already using a weaker-than-usual rated strap so your taking your chances.

You can hand sew bar tacks in straps quite easily. It just takes time. Make about 5 bar tacks for safety. If 1 fails, you still have 4 more. The "XX" pattern is not the strongest.
