Hmmm.........I must be missing something for years. I just stick my stake in one of my pre-made knot loops in my guy line, pull it out till tarp is tight and then just shove the darn thing in the ground I do have shock cord added to my guy lines, so if lines start to stretch out, the shock cord takes care of the slack.

What you've been missing are all the buried rocks and roots that collide with my stakes and force me to adjust the position of the stake! (to a non-optimal position...)

Forget who I got the idea from or I would give them credit. Take the line from the pullout and make a marline spike hitch with the stake and stab it in the ground. It don't get much easier and works like a charm. When you pull the stake out the hitch just slides right off the end with no knots and no fuss.

Been doing it this way for years works great. Also when you slide it off your stake it cleans the dirt debris at the same time.

Was messing around with figure 9's originally but had to fuss with their position on the guyline, so I switched over to line-loks.

Prusik's; so I can tension from inside the tarp. Easy Peasy!

In fair weather for 'porch mode' I use taut line hitches between trekking poles and stakes. So there's that too.

Generally I use a taught line hitch ( I have my guy lines attached to the tarp that way).
For the other end - it depends

If porch mode - clove hitch the handle ( as close to tarp as I can) then the other side - sometimes a truckers hitch ( if using a tree to tie off) or taught line

If tying to a tree - Siberian hitch ( and use the taught line on tarp end to tension

If using pegs it depends on the length I set guy line

But knots are useful and you don't require any additional hardware to break or lose

Does anyone do things different in this regard in "winter mode". I hate taking my gloves/mittens off to do knotwork and usually switch to a method more "glove friendly."
