Thread: Name this knot!

    Name this knot!

    Hello,

I am researching and deciding how i will make a hammock chair. This is not for camping, but for use in my home. The one thing that is baffling me is how to combine all of the ropes to make an "eye".

Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks for the help

Here is what i am (attempting) to make!

And here is a better picture of the baffling knot!!!

I think they are just gathered together and bound with a decorative whipping.

Megipbunny: HERE are good instructions for weaving a hammock chair. Best of luck. POST PICTURES WHEN YOU'RE DONE!!

Thanks for the advice. I guess i should have mentioned that i don't really know anything about knots or rope so it looks complicated to me!

I did find one site that suggested just tying all the ropes into one big knot, leaving a loop on the end and then wrapping the loop. but i cant see how that would create a smooth finish. Wouldn't there be a big bump where the knot is?

Also, can anyone guess what type of rope (material and diameter) is used in the first link i put up?

    Thanks again!

I guess i could just lay the ropes together and use the wrapping knot to leave a loop on the end and bind the ropes together, i just wasn't sure how that method would hold up with the weight load on the chair.

The technique is called "cocks combing" it's an old sailors way of combining more than one "eye" or loop.

Alternating half-hitches...you can uses it on round forms like the "eye" in the picture, or something straight like the tiller on a sailboat.

Keep in mind that both ends of each line in the eye is woven into the hammock/chair. The ends of the lines do not terminate in the eye.
