Question Silicon Waterprrofing, good for Windproofing underquilt?

    Simple question,

Would silicon waterproofing spray have any/good affect on a hammock underquilt's outer surface to make it more wind proof and therefore improve the insulation?

I have a cheapo DIY underquilt made from a kids sleeping bag and my own shock cord suspension added.

    Thanks in advance.

I would be worried about condensation due to lack of breatheability. Perhaps an UQ protector that could be removed and added. Just an idea.

Yeah a second skin could work. Adds a little weight but might be worth it.

    Coating underquilt

If the underquilt coating is not breathable, condensation will build up in the insulation, and will be rendered nearly useless. You probably have poly fill for insulation. When wet, won't keep you warm.
It sounds like you can make gear. Get some breathable rip stop nylon, and make an undercover.

Yes an UQ protector or even a hammock sock will add warmth to your set up.

The good thing about an UQP is

that it can be adjusted to fit tightly when needed, and loosened when not. Loosening the protector also helps regulate temperature.

    Ok, so not waterproofing then.
    Thanks guys.

Hammock sock sounds very interesting, I'll look that up.

I'm not bad with DIY with metal, wood corp, glues plastics and even the odd bit of hand sewing.

But when It comes to making my own UQ or TQ I've no skills yet with a sewing machine and am darn scared about wasting valuable materials like goose down :P, even ripstop nylon I'd rather not waste with my own ineptness.

Eventually I'll get there, or find another way of acquiring one.

    Thanks again guys!
