I've fallen into the habit of calling all the extraneous charges that accumulate as a package crosses the border (taxes and brokerage) "duty". Bad habit.
I'm totally ok with paying either taxes or brokerage, or both, just nice to know up front, you know? My first order from an American vender was for $8 worth of stuff, and there was a $40 brokerage. Which my parents paid, and I was stuck with. I would have refused the shipment, if I had been home.
To be clear, that was nearly 20 years ago, and I was 19 at the time. Not a HF vendor.
