I’ve been reading and learning from this forum for a couple months, and thought I would finally get around to thanking you all for the enormous amount of information, opinion and humor available here. Seems like a great community. My intro: I’ve lived in several cities, on both coasts, in the Midwest and now in Utah. In my youth (the 1970’s…please, no pictures!), I started solo backpacking and flyfishing, with trips in the Rockies, parts of the AT in New England, and parts of California. My dear wife and kids (and friends) camp, hike and backpack with me, but now that most of my kids have moved to other parts of the world, I am re-opening my old habit of solo backpacking. It has been interesting to watch the rapid evolution of gear in both of these hobbies, and I started thinking about hammock camping as a lighter weight & much more comfortable option for backpacking (especially compared to my old gear!). Recently I’ve spent a dozen nights in my hammock, in the back yard, in the basement, and in the Uintas (down to the 20’s already this fall). I’ve made some of my own gear and purchased some from the excellent cottage industries. The hammock is so amazingly comfortable and adaptable that I don’t see me sleeping on the ground again on camping or backpacking trips, unless for social reasons.
