What gear and camping tips did you learn about at Watoga 2013 Fall MAHHA?

I admit it! I'm a total gear junkie and the best place to learn about hammock gear is at a hang.

So OK everyone, what gear and camping tips did you learn about at Watoga? Can be hammocks, hammock suspension, hammock stands, stoves, backpacks, headlamps, quilts, quilt suspensions, DIY projects, firestarters, knives. Something you saw on the hammock tours or learned about at one of the mini-workshops or from another hanger. Anything!

I missed a lot of the conversation about Dan's new hammock stand bracket (The CowBells!) that he recently designed, had made, and brought to the hang. Wouldn't mind hearing people's opinions on that bracket. He said he was hoping for comments and feedback to improve them for future versions.

I also learned that I have not been keeping up with all of Dutchware's gadgets and need to check his website more often.

PICTURES WANTED. If you took a picture of something that you thought was cool, please post.

I learned a lot at the hang. Being new to hammocking, that wasn't hard. One of the things I picked up during the tour was about building my own pole mods for my tarps. All the parts are readily available and rather cheap from Quest Outfitters. That's definitely on my to do list in the next few weeks. I also learned how easy it is to make caldera cones for all my pots from 2q. Those are just two of the things that stuck out.

I learned that i brought WAY too much stuff with me and that i want a bridge hammock, i also learned that i need to make my set up more stremline and simple so that i could have spent more time enjoying the hang and less time setting every thing up!, also picked myself up some brackets from Dan, cowbells for when i dont have a tre.

Yes, the Cow Bells! Bought a pair from Dan and will be getting materials this week.

    ALWAYS a great time!

I never drink water. I'm afraid it will become habit-forming.

    First on the long list........

That the only thing better than chocolate ganache covered brownies around the campfire at night is the conversation that goes with them -- thanks hamhocker, and thanks to everyone that welcomed my son and I around the fire saturday night and did I say thanks for the brownies...

The "cowbells" must be the nicely machined aluminum tripod brackets that Dan is developing. He sent me a set, and I added 2"x3"x6' legs to them and got a nice hammock stand. I'll let Dan post photos and more info when he's ready.

I had a great time talking to others about insulated hammocks. Stormcrow tried one of my new ones, and we talked about what comes next. It was also a treat to see Slowhike's hammock. Here's someone else who has been quietly refining the concept for a couple of years now. His insulated top panel attached at the edges with velcro is sized to drape perfectly, so there's no air infiltration and no gaps inside where convection could cool you off. All those years at the Mt. Rogers hangs in January have given him a wealth of experience to draw on. Inspired by that, I went home Sunday and got out my winter hammock and insulated sock, so I was toasty and warm this morning at 28°. The insulated sock has some similarities to Slowhike's design.
