Socks tend to be smaller volumes, and the sides of the sock are more likely to be in contact with the hammock, but that difficulty can be overcome by using side tie-outs. In my winter set-up the hammock tieouts attach to the inside if the sock/tent, and a corresponding tieout on the outside of the sock attaches to the tarp tieout point. Then a single line from the tarp pulls all three into position. Only the tarp tieout needs adjusting; the other two are fixed. The one from the hammock to the sock should be a bungee, though.

    Good info WV.
I'll be experimenting with home made socks this winter. I understand the tie-outs from your description - thanks.
I was thinking about a 2 part sock - a shoulders down cocoon and a cone over the head attached to the ridge line (thus keeping the breath out of the sock).
What works for you, what materials, and do you have a photo? I live/camp in the same climate as you.

I wouldn't recommend tyvek for sock material. A lighter more breathable fabric would be my choice.

Tyvek and other less breathable materials will require more venting to reduce condensation and allow air in to breath.

A highly breathable material will not block rain and snow as well, but condensation is a bigger issue, unless you aren't planning on using a tarp over the top.

I'm looking into this now. I made a hammock sock of soft tyvek
I used 'soft' tyvek (not house tyvek). It is very light, breathable, soft and quiet. Here's the stuff I used:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pure-white-S...E:L:OU:US:3160
"Just Jeff's Into the Woods" has this basic sock construction idea.
    http://tothewoods.net/ImagesHomemade...oRidgeline.JPG
My Sock goes from shoulders down to hammock suspension at the foot end(under the detachable ridgeline). My head/breath is not enclosed in the sock (to reduced condensation considerably). I just added a draw string to tighten up around the shoulders/bottom. Weight is 7 ounces. Folds up flat to 1" X 6" X 8". Cost was $20 material and $12 roll of tape.
Made for use with TQ/Sleeping bag and pad, but NOT enough room for BQs.
I like the soft tyvek results so far, but I'm not sold on durability of the tyvek tape yet (no sewing here, just cut and tape).
Backyard 'nap' testing is very positive so far, but I haven't tested it overnight in real cold weather yet (this year's experiment); so far just a couple successful naps on cold breezy days.
If anyone is interested let me know and I'll take some pictures.

OK. Like I said - this still needs more real life testing.
I made this for spring fishing trips where it is cold, windy, and rainy. I use a mummy bag with hood (and hat), wool blanket and CCF pads in my DIU gathered end hammock as well as a small rip-stop tarp. Thus I had a need for a simple sock to combat spray and wind.

Simple soft tyvek and tape construction.
    1) Fold 8' X 55" tyvek sheet in half and cut the foot end - 32" to end leaving a drip tail.
    https://www.hammockforums.net/galler...5_original.jpg
    2) Bottom view - cut a 2' by 55" triangle to widen the sock shoulder area from 8'X55" to 8'X80"
    https://www.hammockforums.net/galler...6_original.jpg
    3) Tack this all in place with 1" X 1/2" tyvek tape strips every couple feet. Then tape up the seams (inside and outside).
    4) I added the draw string at the opening to reduce drafts - a 2" channel tyvek fold taped up and a gorilla tape re-enforcement where the cord comes trough.

This is very light sock - 7oz prior to the draw string addition.
I planned to add a funnel hood to the head end - but I haven't seen a need for it so far.
P.S. Sock is for a DIY gathered end hammock/pad/sleeping bag - Not for a Hennessey bottom entry unless you want to cut your way out:>)

    Thanks Oldpapy,

I can definitely see Tyvek working the way you made yours.

I can also see variations like:
Full coverage, taller, loops to suspend from ridgeline with vents, Velcro closures and many other options depending on how much coverage and comfort you need.

I think the minimal breath-ability of Tyvek would be fine as long as it is partially vented, but don't attempt to seal your self in.

I know I always leave an opening near my face when I use my Warbonnet sock made of highly breathable nylon.

I really appreciate my sock on cold/windy/wet weather. And consider it the best 9 ounces in my kit.

Thanks for the pix, OldPappy! Your Tyvek sock is CL!

I think LightHiker would do well to add this to the kit. (me too!)

Thanks, I'll just have to see how well it works during this winter/spring.
Note: Tyvek is not rip-stop material. There is no pressure/tension/strain when using tyvek as this type of simple sock so this shouldn't be an issue, but having tape (any kind) along would be wise.
Rip-stop nylon is a more standard sock material - I just wanted to try something different.
