I once spent 4-1/2 years sleeping every night in a hammock. I was homeless in a semi-urban area, and all my worldly belongings were in that camp. I couldn't afford to lose anything to thievery or vandalism.
You better believe everything that could be camo'ed was camo'ed!
A passerby could walk within a few yards of my camp and not see it. I worked very hard at this. I even cut bundles of palmetto fronds and hung them at odd angles to block the view into my camp.
Security was everything!
I was eventually moved to write about my experiences here: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/222943
Even today, on casual camping trips, I'd still prefer to have a very discreet camp. Why be flashy?
A long time ago I read about an experiment some bear researchers conducted in Alaska.
About 100 yards from a busy salmon stream on the tundra, the scientists pitched a camouflage-colored tent in view of the stream. Then they retired to a distant hillside to observe. It wasn't long before grizzly bears began arriving along the streambed. Bear after bear would raise its head and glance at this indistinct "lump" in the distance, but then continue on its way.
Then, the researchers swapped the camo tent for one of the multi-colored fluorescent "dayglow" models so commonly seen in sporting goods stores.
Each and every bear left the streambed and approached the tent. Some even knocked it down, even though there were no foodstuffs in it.
Which tent would you rather camp in?
