+1 on what OldDog said. I do the exact same thing. I have a gathered end (channel) and use a continuous loop of dyneema larks headed around rings. Simply undo the larks head and drop it in the washer. Quick and easy.
And, yes, I wash my underwear as well!
your suppose to wash underwear? dammit. havent washed my hammock yet but it still smells new after 20 visits or so
since my ENO gets used frequently in the summer, i do a bath tub wash once a year at best. normally tho, no. i have however soaked the hammock on occasion at camp to cool off....
but normally no, i wont wash it till i notice any "issues". and even then, its just a soak in the tub for an hour or so.

I think a good caveat to this question might be do you machine wash your hammock if it has an attached bug nets.
I've just never felt comfortable putting my bug netting in the machine. Hand washing seems to have done very nicely, most often in the bathtub and use the shower to rinse. And of course always hang to dry.

I was sold a very heavily smoked hammock. Fresh air were insufficient to get an intense campfire smoke smell out.
3 washes did. Use good soap / detergent. Use the tub of a top-loader, but don't let it agitate. You do the stirring by hand. But,y ou can use the washer to centrifuge old water out, and bring new water in.
For the third wash, I added some pine oil soap, thinking there might be "affinities", as it were.

Same routine for another previously-owned hammock where the smoke was from much, much time relaxing with cigarettes. Filtered ones, my nose reported. Bottom of unwashed --ever -- ashtray smell. Three washes did it.

Some here proudly claim to wear little clothing in their hammocks. I prefer to be lightly clothed, in order to keep quilt and hammock cleaner longer. It works. I'm now wearing a hood for nights in the upper 40s.

I don't see a problem washing my hammocks in the machine. But in Germany we only have front loaders, which don't twist and rip fabrics. I also put my hammocks (with integrated netting) in a washing bag to make sure they cannot be ripped apart.
I have to say that I don't care for the smell of new fabrics and this would be a reason alone to wash my hammocks at least once.
And yes, I wash my underwear. I even wash my underwear while hiking. Every night, if possible. I hate to smell like an weasel.
Yes I have washed my hammock several times. Just soaked it into detergent foam and rinse it a little bit. After wash it looks quite neat and clean.
I do wash mine whenever needed. I just throw them into my front loader and wash away, I usually hang dry outside in warmer weather or throw in dryer in the winter. Never gave it much thought.

the only time I ever washed mine was when the funk woke me up. Top loader. gentle cycle. It survived. Maybe that's why no one wants to test my hammock....
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
